For my fellow "more experienced" members of the workforce - let’s reduce self-inflicted ageism.

You’ve heard the phrases before and I’ve used them myself. “I’m having a senior moment,” or “I know I’m dating myself here, but…,” or “I’m an old dog and it’s going to be hard to learn a new trick.”

Poking fun at yourself to lighten the mood can be fun every now and then, but this self-denigration can backfire as team members will not take you seriously or will begin to question your capability levels.

On the flipside, history lessons are necessary and part of your obligation as a “more experienced” human to ensure those around you don’t repeat the mistakes of the past.

My recommendation is to simply be mindful of when a bit of self-deprecating humor is warranted and when it’s tipping over to an unconstructive behavior. I'll be doing the same.

A productive and valued older workforce will be essential to our economy as age demographics continue to shift. There’s no need to sow unnecessary doubt regarding the capability of older workers through self-inflicted ageism.

We are vibrant. We are productive. We have so much to give.

Have a great rest of your weekend!

Andy
